12-11-11 Luz quinceanera

Luz is turning 15 and wanted some portraits in her dress. I started out shooting with natural light and switched over to shooting with a single strobe. I had a Canon 580exII on a Bogen nano stand. To attach the strobe to the stand you need a umbrella adapter. I use Alien bee cyber sync triggers to trigger my strobe. They have been pretty reliable over time but have a few quirks that I don't like. I want to upgrade to Pocket Wizard's.

For this shoot I chose to shoot at Hillcrest Terrace in Fullerton, CA. We started shooting about 1 hour before sunset. Due to the tall trees, lack of clouds and building we did not get that magical golden hour light.

This is the first strobed picture of the set. I was using a 43" white umbrella to soften the light. I was using a half power change to orange (CTO) gel on my strobe. It changes the color of the light coming out of the strobe. I wanted the color of the light coming out of the flash to match the color of the ambient light. If you have a strobe you need to pick up a gel kit, I recommend this kit. It has all of the colors you need to get started. Pick up this book by Joe McNally to get started in off camera lighting.
